Webcam Performance

hi all,
   I found that webcam under linux peform not good as in window,but I don't know the reason.In fact how data is captured and go throught to the programme in linux?Such as start at USB,ram,video0...
   Can you tell me what is the data flow?because I failed to search it in the internet about this kind of information, so please tell me if you know. Thankyou very much~
