Yes, but Gentoo doesn't use fixed /dev nodes anymore..it's a device
*file system*, which creates needed nodes on the fly.
Check /etc/devfs.d and /etc/devfsd.conf (or some such) and read the
config file carefully... if there is no inbuilt support for your camera
then you may have to add register() lines to load the modules for the
camera.
Also, have you enabled the usbfs ?
If so, it works differently from devfs (for usb devices, that is).
To auto-load the modules needed, start with (auto-)loading the correct
usb module, either uhci, usb-uhci or ohci (depends on your chipset)
This should detetct all connected usb devices and make nodes for them.
USB mass storage is pretty standard, this should load itself without you
telling it to.
Yes, it does really work, NO it is neither straightforward nor easy.
