How to update Kernel

I downloaded the kernel update rpm from the Red
Hat site - is it okay to run this rpm (rpm -UVh
kernel....rpm) directly from the Konsole under
KDE and root? I guess I'm wondering if the rpm
is run while other services are operating will it
cause problems?
