proftpd problem

on my server i'm running slackware 8.1 with the stock proftpd package.
i just started having this rather annoying problem when logging in to
FTP files. i log in and the get up to this point:

Resolving host name mysite.com...
Connecting to (mysite.com) -> IP: x.x.x.x PORT: 21
Connected to (mysite.com) -> Time = 120ms
Socket connected waiting for login sequence.

And then it sits there and waits for 20 seconds before continuing.

Anyone know what could be causing this? it wasn't doing this before.
