Aha! A response!
I've used Grub with Mdk since Mdk-7.0, and have installed each subsequent
version in a different partition so that at least two ran concurrently. As
I deleted the oldest one, I would transfer control of Grub to the next
oldest (or most used) version.
For example: Mdk8.0 was on /dev/hda13 and Mdk8.2 was installed on
/dev/hda14. To transfer, I (as root) typed: grub-install '(hd0,13)'. On
reboot, the /boot/grub/menu.lst in Mdk8.2 showed up. I always made sure
the menu files were different so that I could see that the transfer was
successful.
Now, I'm ready to get rid of Mdk8.2 in favor of Mdk9.0. Mdk9.0 is on
/dev/hda15. I typed: grub-install '(hd0,14)'. The response was
successful and that I should make sure device.map was correct (it was).
Again, the menu file was different for Mdk9.0. When I rebooted, the menu
from 8.2 showed up!
I tried several things, including installing Grub in the Slackware partition
(/dev/hda9). Downloaded the latest version, compiled and installed it
without a hitch. Did grub-install '(hd0,8)', and got a successful
response. Rebooting showed the Mdk8.2 menu!
So I figure that there's something going on with the latest versions of Grub
that has changed how this should be done, but I can't seem to discover what
I need. It may be that I don't know enough to recognize what I'm seeking
if I did find it.
In this regard, Mdk8.2 uses Grub-0.90 (I think...), and both Mdk9.0 and
Slackware8.1 use grub-0.92. Is my problem that the installation routine
has changed between 0.90 and 0.92? What is the change and how do I
proceed?
Thanks much,
Bill Tallman
