sound server problem

I have a problem running WindowMaker: Xmms runs perfectly in KDE but no
sound is detected when I switch from KDE to WindowMaker (which is my
preferred window manager). When I launch Xmms from konsole I get this error
message:
mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
arts_init error: can't connect to aRts soundserver
I understand that there apparently is a conflict with Arts, but how do I fix
it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
