Which distro is easiest to compile in?

I've had a lot of problems installing .tar.gz programs in SuSE 8.0
and I'm thinking I should try a different species of Linux.

Most recently I failed at installing the newest version of
Icewm and iDesk from .tar.gz files. The Icewm I downloaded
came from here
http://www.icewm.org/icewm-1_2_12.php

Apparently SuSE 8.0 puts things in different directories from where
the "makefile" that came with the Icewm update expects them to be.
I ran into a similar problem with iDesk.

Is there some standard of where things are located in a Linux
installation that is generally adhered to, but which SuSE is
varying from? Would Red Hat or Mandrake or Debian or some other
distro be easier to compile in?
