That would be a neat trick, since slackware packages come as .tgz.

You have lost me somewhere. If you replace the slackware package
management system with rpm, and you replace slackware .tgz packages with
rpms from (necessarily) somewhere else, you do not have slackware.
That's fine.

Or perhaps you converted all the slackware .tgz''s to rpms with alien or
something, then installed them over the initial install? Just to build
up the database? (I don't know a way to modify the rpm database except
by installing or removing packages .. let me know if you do!).
