Problem with right-click to mount removable media. Gnome2/RedHat 9

System: RHL9

I know this works:
 * If I plug in my SanDisk flashcard reader, my system is configured to
automagically put an entry in /etc/fstab and create /mnt/flash. (This also
works with USB Zip and floppy drives, and my Nikon 995 USB digicam. Thus
i will refer to these devices as "USB-Storage" from here on out)
 * I can then Right-Click on the Gnome2 desktop, choose
"Disks-><USB-Storage>" and the flash reader will mount and an icon will
appear on the desktop.

My problem is that this only works when I have plugged the USB-Storage
device in *before* I log on to the Gnome desktop! That is to say, Gnome
"knows" what is user-mountable in /etc/fstab at startup, but does not
appear to re-read /etc/fstab synamically!

Thus, I have to log out, plug in USB-storage device, then log back in to
have right-click ease of use when mounting removeable media.

How can I get Gnome to re-read /etc/fstab when a new device is plugged in?

I have searched USENET for an answer to this problem but no one seems to
mention it. I imagine other people *must* have experienced this, though,
as I have experienced on five different computers all with slightly
different configurations and all work essentially the same.

Has anyone else noticed this flaw in Gnome GUI design?

Maybe this is a RedHat Gnome problem? Redhat has shipped with other
problems in their Gnome2 desktop...

Thanks!
