Cibao,

Hey where did you put that "tempted the fates" stuff? Is that some kind of
header for slrn or something? Does it insert the correct newsgroup when you
make a reply?

Thanks for the excellent response to my questions about linux packaging. That
was a nicely detailed and satisfying answer. :)

I use Xnews because it is about the best newsreader for windows, IMHP. I
would use the linux computer but there is only a 17" monitor on that machine,
will have to shop for a nice 21 incher at the next MarketPro show. Good deals
there, under $200 for a 21" monitor with warranty. slrn is pretty neat though
and reminds me of the old dial in, shell account days. We used tin back then.

So there is a package manager of sorts for slackware. Ahh, I was reluctant to
use slackware because I haven't used it since my early pioneering linux days,
tens of years ago. Back then just getting linux to work and maybe display a
picture and get that crappy fvwm window manager to run was a big deal, never
mind actually networking or doing anything really cool with it. Linux sure
has changed a lot since then.

I upgraded to rh9 to fix my broken rh8 because I had already downloaded and
burned the CD set for it. I wasn't actually going to upgrade because I was
afraid that it would break my setup. I run a FQDN, apache server, phpbb2
family message forum (With mysql database.), java address book, dirwrap_photo
for online family photo album (dirwrap_photo kicks ass as a web photo album
with photo upload ability.), mail server, small LAN and gateway for 2 XP
computers, and vsftpd FTP server. All of this stuff is setup really good and
runs quite well, so I did not want to risk "breaking it" with the rh9
upgrade. Turns out that the upgrade did not break anything, other than making
me enable vsftpd and moving my old configs back to make it work again. Worked
out pretty well after all.

You have a pretty neat setup going on over there. Is the slackware package
manger CLI or GUI or both? Apt/Synaptic work really well for redhat if you
don't force anything. Mozilla would not install because I have galeon
installed and some other lib too was a dependency. Mozilla 1.4 really is not
that bad, although I do prefer galeon. Mozilla Mail does not work at all,
cannot enter text into a new message and all buttons are grayed out but for
the stop button and the new message button. Clicking on the stop button does
nothing anyway. I already tried mozilla 1.2 and 1.4. The mail just does not
work. Shame because it actually looked pretty good.

Heh heh, "rpm hell", huh? Yeah it does seem that way sometimes. Stops me from
upgrading to newer versions of good stuff until redhat or apt releases it in
a compatible rpm form. I used to use Ximian desktop and that was pretty neat
but since redhat went over to Nautilus, I really don't need it now.

I will have to build another machine to try out slackware with, I don't want
to mess up what I currently have but you sure have whetted my appetite for
trying out something a little more technically challenging and more "UNIX
like". Thanks for the great reply!
