Accessing a BB0060 through serial port + Alcatel's Speedtouch 500 any better?

I own a GNET BB0060 and "some settings" I made now deny access to the
modem through the http interface. Complying to ISPs requests, GNET
does not install a reset button anymore and the serial port must be
used instead. (Given how often people forget their password, it's
likely many serial cables will be sold :)

I access the modem through ttyS0, either with minicom or KPPP, with
software flow control at 38400 bauds. The serial port seems OK, for RX
and TX anyway, since I get echo in minicom when I short pins 2 and 3.

But I only get this one message endlessly:

Error returned from Gag: 19468
CfgInit: Gag Request Failed for MO Id :0 Operation :Create

On port tyS1, I have an old 14400 isa modem. (My 33,600 fried during a
storm a few months ago.) The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-6VXC7-4X. I use
Slackware but didn't do better with Knoppix. (I thought it might have
have something to do with my configuration.) Support at Gnet's told me
they had no problem with Red Hat... and their computer.

Is it possible that this not very standard mobo has something to do
with the problem? If so, is there any way around? If not, any other
suggestion?

If I don't succeed in getting the modem to work, I'm planning to buy
an Alcatel Speedtouch 500; at least, it's got a reset switch! And I
don't like The Gnet firmware very much: it's very complex and
sometimes does what it wants, instead of what you want it to do. How
does the Speedtouch compare? (It's 60% more expensive for the same
features!)
