I may flicker a bit at first BUT we should be able to get that bulb
on! :-)

I don't remember which distribution you are using ... but what you
need is the telnetd package. (We don't need both ftp and telnet at
this point.) The "d" at the end means it is the demon, daemon or
server for that service. On your system you will have "telnet"
(client) installed and you can have "telnetd" (server) installed.

Basically you go into your package manager and query which "telnet"
packages are installed. If there is no telnetd then that must be
installed and configured, the configuration is usually done as part of
the installation.

Normally I wouldn't suggest telnet BUT the alternative (ssh) is more
complicated to set up and Windows doesn't have a client installed by
default. So for now telnet it is.

Once you get it installed on linux you can test it by, on the Linux
machine, enter at the command prompt `telnet localhost`. If you get a
login prompt and can successfi=ully log in all is well.

>From the WinXP side you would enter at the command or start/run prompt
`telnet 192.168.0.2` which is the Linux machines IP address. The same
login prompt and successful login should result.

As a side note, the WinXP "route" information you posted previously
didn't show any "gateway" settings for 192.168.0.2 (the Linux machines
IP). Until this is resolved getting the WinXP machine onto the
internet via the Linux machine isn't going to work. This "telnet"
experiment should work just fine though!

Happy Day-After-Halloween! :-)
