when you do upgrades, redhat (actually its rpm, so this applies to mandrake
and any other rpm distribution) will have to decide what to do with modified
files.
Rather than just deleting a modified file, it preserves them somehow.
There are two ways it preserves the modified file
1. moves it to filename.rpmorig , and installs the new file
2. leaves the file alone, and installs filename.rpmnew
It seems that you have modified some file and so the new file isnt installed
properly.
You should at least check /etc for *.rpmorig and *.rpmnew files, and see
what they might contain.
eg /etc/modules.conf.rpmnew might exist
