First of all look at afs and coda fs. These are file share systems that use
local caching and will be faster as nfs or smb/cifs/samba.
For the least hassle just buy some 1gB nic's and a 1 gB switch. The nic's
are not expensive only a 1gB switch will cost some money. Maybe it is
cheaper to have a nic for each client in the server. However, you need to
work with cross cables and this architecture stops at about 4 clients.
