We should almost be getting to a point that we can switch this to
another thread instead of "networking" ... maybe "Samba", but after we
get the rc.local thing figured out.

On the 192.168.0.2 machine what do you get when you type"
`ls -l /etc/rc5.d/` (Note the trailling "/")

I don't have Redhat installed so I can't go check the exact location
of the config files so we have to find out on yours.

What are you using to see both machines? How are you browsing, which
application? I'm assuming "hphost" is still running Linux at this
point.

Again, what application are you using to do this browsing?

On my machine I can browse the printer (see its name anyway) and the
shares and printing and file sharing work fine.

Ping isn't directly related to this issue ... since Internet
Connection sharing is working then the base TCP/IP stuff is OK! To
get Samba working it is all in the smb.conf file AND having the
service running.

As I mentioned the app LinNeighbourhood is a nice stand alone way to
check the browsing. I think the only config you have to do is make
sure your "workgroup" is configured the same as on all the machines.

>Are there any remote hidden places - any idea what I'm missing?

Not that I'm aware of. One basic piece of info ... when you make
changes to the smb.conf file you have to restart the samba service to
get the changes to be recognized. This indirectly gets back to the
rc.local issue, we'll have some similar questions to look into this.

>I stayed away from xp and internet explorer today #$%^&*()

I helped a friend put a WinXP Pro machine on his network yesterday and
I had to go through the Internet Wizard at least twice to get IE to
use the intranet instead of dialup ... it was almost as though the
choice didn't show up the first time ... BUT we were chatting and
sipping on some refreshments at the time so that may have been part of
the problem. :-)

You just have to be careful not to get "too many irons in the fire" at
one time. Speaking from personal experience it is easy to get
"confused" if you get discouraged and keep jumping from issue to
issue. You are trying to get a lot of (new to you) concepts going all
at once so be careful! :-)

Have a good morning and enjoy a coffee or 2.
