We occasionally have similar problems, with cisco switches and brand desktop
10/100 NICs (SMC,3com ..). The only solution so far is turn off
autonegotiation and force both switchport and NIC driver to do 10MBit
halfduplex. Especially after updating the NT boxen to 2K, some of the NICs
exhibit the same behavior (they get IP, gateway, DNS ... from DHCP but stop
working afterwards).
