dhcp startup

I have a pcmcia ethernet card that works fine but, for some reason, I
cannot get dhcp to work:

If I start up with YaST, the card works fine when an IP address is
declared but, if I select DHCP I find that the network will not start.
Here I find that I can start the network manually (with ifconfig) but
only if I declare an IP address.

Can anyone out there tell me what log file or setup file I should check
to try and diagnose the reason for this problem?

I am running SuSE 8.1

Many thanks,
Alan Searle
