Good evening,
Can anyone advise me on where I'm going wrong, or point me in the
direction of a site that describes how to dual boot between Windows 2000
and SuSE 8.2 Professional.
I've had a look at a few sites that have suggested the following:
1. Install Win 2000 first, and ensure that it is placed in the first
partition.
2. Then install Linux.
3. Ensure that LILO is the preferred boot manager.
The problem that I've encountered is that after I install Linux it
reboots the machine but does not present me with a choice of OS's -
instead it tries to boot itself into Linux, and after going through the
motions of the initial boot screen it displays an error message and the
three little lights on the keyboard (CAPS Lock etc) start flashing!!
Whilst I'm relatively new to Linux, I have installed it and had it
running on another machine, as the only OS, with no problems.
The only thing that I have found that may explain the problem is the
PCMag article at the following URL:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,7720,00.asp
The (proposed) setup on my machine has three partitions, as follows:
C - Windows 2000 20GB
D - Linux 20GB
E - Shared partition 40GB
Is the authors advice 100%, which means I have to resize the partitions,
or is there a work around?
Many, many thanks in advance for any pointers.
Cheers,
Andrew

Quote from above article:
Note one thing: LILO works only for operating systems installed within
the first 1,024 cylinders of your hard drive. Practically speaking (and
a good guideline if not technically true), this means that if you
install Linux to a drive larger than 8GB, be sure to put Linux within
the first 8GB. If, for example, you have a 12GB hard drive and Win 98
takes up the first 9GB, you may create a separate partition for Linux
past that point. LILO won't be able to find it, though. In such a case,
you'll have to use a partition utility to resize the Win 98 partition
to, say, 6GB, and then install Linux right after it. Sometimes the only
way to resolve this is through trial and error.
