Cron to email notification of ftp file upload?

I am running redhat 9 with vsftpd as a service with anon and regular logins.
I have my /var/pub/incoming directory set to allow anon uploads with write
only access and no directory creation. I use dirwrap photo (A marvolous cgi
script from Dmag Designs) to run a family photo album on my apache server.
This cgi photo script allows directory creation and one-at-a-time file
uploads, produces thumbnails, and displays each picture in a nice html
wrapper.

Since uploading one picture at a time can be tedious when family members want
to dump a set of 50 pictures, I put a link to the ftp/incoming directory on
the site. The family can click this link and it will open an Internet
Explorer window for them, right to the incoming directory of the ftp server.
Now they can select all the photos they wish to upload in an explorer window
and "throw them on top of" the open ftp window and all the pictures come to
me so that I can move them over to the family photo directory.

This is a really neat thing and it works quite well but if they forget to
tell me that they sent pictures, I forget to check the incoming ftp directory
and thus, the pictures get forgotten for a while.

Is it possible to make some sort of cron job that will check the
/var/ftp/incoming directory several times a day and email me if there are any
files present, baring the .message file, so that I will know there are new
pictures? If so, can anyone help me make such a thing and get it to run all
the time?
