But the GUI's package manager does, assuming yours has one. Try running
"grpmi". Might need some configurations, dunno. If you're running
mandrake, try running "rpmdrake".

When I was using Windows, I preferred to make my own programs directory
too. The reason was that it was on another drive. Still, once you
realize that all the programs will be in some directory with bin/ in its
name, you really have all you need to know. I mean, if you're going to be
putting everything in /programs, there's really no difference.
Oh, and if you *do* put everything in a "non-standard" location, you'll
either have to make shortcuts to the new location (just like in Windows)
or you'll have to type in the location as a full path/filename. For
example, if you run some particular program from the command line, it
could get irritating having to put "/programs/directory-it\'s-in/command"
when by having it in a standard location you could just type "command".
This is similar to MS DOS's "PATH" variable. Which can be changed in
Linux too.
Do what you want though - but remember that by "customizing" your system,
you /will/ make it more difficult for people to troubleshoot or help you
troubleshoot.
