Sorry for not preserving this long thread's structure while snipping.
However, you said mounting with both ext3 and vfat options "worked" which
is impossible. Then you say mounting with the vfat option "mounts fine"
which I believe because it is not only possible but also works as
advertised. Please don't blame the mirror for your own appearance.
