Had a similar problem with a serial mouse on an old AMD 300MHz box. I
solved it by reinstalling using XFree 3.3.6 instead of the newer 4.x
version. Once I did that, the system worked just fine.

Both packages should be bundled with Vector for compatiblility with old
systems. It gives you a choice of which to use when you install.
