Joystick and ALSA

For some reason alsa 0.9.8 (I'll try upgrading but don't see anything in the
changelog to suggest it will help) is interfering with my gameport
joystick. When the snd-via82xx module is installed the joystick doesn't
work, when I rmmod it the joystick works again (but I have no sound). I
notice from lsmod that snd-via82xx apparently depends on the gameport
module (as do the ns558 and analog modules, which should.) I think alsa
must be somehow hijacking my gameport. How can I stop it?
Thanks
Mikey
