I'm running Mandrake 9.1, with Gnome 2.2.

I wanted to be clever, and install Gnome 2.4 on my machine. I downloaded
all the tar files from ftp.gnome.org, and compiled everything (I did not
use garnome). At first, I tried to compile and install in the default
location (/usr/local) but that would not work, so I tried /usr, and
everything compiled and installed without problem! (Is this a Mandrake
thing?)

However, now when I start Gnome, I get my wallpaper, and this nasty
message many times:

'There was a problem registering the panel with the bonobo-activation
server.
The error code is: 1
The panel will now exit.'

Nothing else works. I have to CTRL+ALT+BKSPC to get out.

I've been without my Gnome for nearly a week now, and I haven't found a
solution on the web so far. Althought I'm a software developer, I'm
still fairly new to Linux. Does anyone have any idea how I could
resurect my Gnome?

Thanks in advance!
