Interesting point--that Microsoft hasn't said yet whether this will be a
subcription service or not. They need to keep their options open. The
reason is, it will be entirely determined by the market conditions that
will exist when/(if?) Longhorn reaches market. If Linux is out there
and strong, they will not want to hurt their market share. If Linux has
been sidelined (say by legal strong arming that is going on now) they
will want to extract the max revenue, which will mean subscriptions.
