remote ssh not closing after X program run

I have ssh running between two computers, and I log onto the remote
machine using ssh. On the remote machine I run and X program which
displays on the display on the local machine. I then shut the remote
program down, so the X forwarding is no longer in use. But when I log
out from the remote machine, ssh still does not close. There is not
remote X program running to hold the connection open, but it refuses to
shut down the X connection.

Mandrake 9.0 on both machines. Openssh 3.6.1p2-1.2.90mdk
