Take a look at Gentoo Linux (www.gentoo.org). You'll get the most
optimized install for your particular system, plus its Portage utility
keeps you up-to-date. The main problem with Gentoo, however, is that
the install is via an online connection. So, if you are using dialup,
it'll take forever.

The next, best distro I'd recommend is Slackware. And instead of KDE or
GNOME for your GUI, use a lightweight window manager like IceWM or,
even better, a light GUI environment like XFce. (Both come on the
standard Slackware distro.) XFce is also 100% compatible with KDE and
GNOME apps as long as the appropriate libraries are installed.
