PATH problems

I have debian unstable installed on my laptop, everything runs fine and
so forth yet i have a few questions about my path. Why do i get two
different paths when i am in gnome running xterm from when i am at the
pure terminal. Should not the path from /etc/profile be used? I am
logged in as root in both cases and there is no /root/.profile so i am a
bit confused where the one in xterm is coming from. The one in the
standard terminal as i have confirmed is the one from /etc/profile. Any
ideas?
