Two reasons: gnome is inherently slow, as is fedora. Using a lighter
window manager such as fluxbox, icewm or wmaker will help, as would
changing distro to debian or slackware. However the latter is a bit more
work....

No, if you boot into the text console you can't run X apps such as
mozilla. However using a lightweight window manager should help a lot -
you could just use it with an xterm run maximised, and just start X apps
when you need them.

Also mozilla itself can be a bit slow... you might want to try one of
the mozilla derivatives such as galeon or mozilla-firefox.
