Upgrading My Web Browsers

Hi, gang,

I hope this will be one of the last of the newbie questions for me. I am
learning so much about Linux. However, there is one area about which I
have my doubts about getting into. I have four web browsers on my
Mandrake 9.2 with KDE 3.1.3 (Galeon, Konqueror, Opera and Netscape). The
same day I downloaded my Netscape 7.1 for Linux I downloaded Netscape 7.1
for Windows on my dual boot computer (1.3 GHz Duron with 640 Mb RAM, 40
Gig Windows drive and 60 Gig Linux drive). Netscape for Windows gave me
the option of two versions (with or without Java) with the Java adding
around 20 Meg to the size of the Netscape. Later, when I downloaded
Netscape for Linux, I found that, unlike with Windows, there is no Java
compatible version, but that I would have to get the Java on my own. None
of the other three browsers have Java either.

Later, I went to Sun Microsystem's home page and found Java. However,
what I found really surprised me. Instead of it being somewhere remotely
in the vicinity of 20 Megabytes as I expected from the Windows version of
Netscape, it was in the vicinity of 100 Megabytes, making me wonder what
it was that they were offering. Could it be the same thing? Could it be
the right thing? At that size difference?

Could this huge file really be the same Java that my Windows' Netscape
requires? If so, why is it so totally huge (five times the size as
Netscape for Windows requires)? If this is not it, then where do I find
what I need? The size difference makes me really wonder.

It is not that the size would be a real problem, I have plenty of disk
space and with a cable modem that typically operates around 1.1 Megabaud,
download time is no real problem either. I am perhaps overly cautious,
not wanting to mess what I already have up.

Also, does anyone have any of those useful, but often overlooked hints to
optimize the Java and my browsers for peak efficiency?

Thank you all in advance.
