Ok, for me, windows xp, i install it, install mobo drivers from motherboard
cd and have to install the video drivers and that's all. then it works
perfectly. yes, it does reboot a lot, lol. Here is a post i made in the
other or another thread. i am sincere and honest here i guess and this gives
a list of my pc and likes or dislikes and what i might like to try or
something.
The one thing i can tell now is i wish to have 3d acelerated video but it's
not necessary. my sound chip isn't supported for some reason out of the box.
mandrake has a humming buzzing sound, no audio at all in suse or fedora core
2 either. and i want to try to get it working maybe, maybe, on my mothers
old HP Pavillion 6360 to run as an nntp server.
The thing I like about linux is it is different, I like a change every now
and then. Like i mean in the GUI and stuff. I love mac os x, i like windows
xp, i don't like linux, but want to. i do. i keep trying from time to time
to justify the use for me when windows xp does what i want and it's by far
way easier for me and it works great on my hardware. So i keep trying to
think of something i could use linux for. I have tried mandrake, lindows,
suse, redhat and Fc which is redhat. i like kmandrake the best for the
install, and lindows. for the desktop i like mandrake and suse i think.
possibly mandrake a bit better.
When i had a mac and OSX i got used to the AA fonts and how pretty the fonts
and icons are. so with linux, i think it's really ugly overlal except for a
couple versions, like suse 8-9 and mandrake 10 and 9.
i have heard about FreeBSD, but that it's harder to use and install then
mandrake and stuff.
I think for me i just want a plug n play linux where you don't need command
line for anything really and stuff i could download i can double click the
installer and install perfectly like with mac and windows. i tried mozilla
in mandrake and it would not install giving me a can't create dir message
everytime.
i don't care about security since i'm behind a really good firewall and a
good business class router. so being root 24/7 works fine for me. allthough
i wouldn't want to per say cus i don't wanna like fry it. if i tried linux
again.
i think for me it's just wanting to try something different and hoping i
like it enough to want to learn,. but i need to find a use for it really and
can't right now. there is one use for it i want, but it's really extremly
difficult and i couldn't do it on my own. being a news server. just extremly
small for eprsonal use to play with sort of. umm, i think linux, for me,
hard to understand and learn. i need tons of hand holding. sometimes i could
read how tos or whatever and not fully understand or it would take a long
time. and i don't have much patience. i want it now and i want it to work
now perfect like windows does. i am not that bad, but sometimes i could be.
windows really does what i need and works fine. linux does it too, but is
way harder for some things and so on.
i guess i keep trying to justify the use for me and i really do wanna give
it a chance. just can't really think of any real good enough reason just
yet.
the reason i have tried so many distros is change. wanting something
different and just maybe i might like something enough to keep it for more
then a couple hrs.
also one thing i wish is that it was web content filter protected to keep
porn away. and with windows, i have cyberpatrol and one is even built into
my router. so that's another reason lately that i have not tried linux much.
cus there's not much if any web content protection that would work free in
linux or something.
but im a linux idiot that really doesn't know hardly anything. all i see in
usenet linux groups like this is how things don't work or command line stuff
like crazy and i steer clear of the CLI totally as much as possible only cus
i know nothing about it yet. need hand holding. i don't wanna buy a linux
book, but would read a most current one if i could download one in pdf and
print it out that had to do with the distro i was using.
for the GUI, i like KDE most i think, but wish it was easy to like install a
theme or manager or something to make it look just like mac os x. but there
is no easy way to do that. i would buy an apple laptop if i had the money,
and use my desktop pc for games. mac os is unix, and a great to me anyway,
GUI. but i still like to try new things.
I've got an old HP pavillion 6360 i think it is. and i tried mandrake 10
powerpack but the first cd won't work cus it says it needs drivers for the
samsung cdrom or something like that. i was thinking to try maybe, with hand
holding from a friend, to set up an nntp server on it to play with. but
mandrake 10 won't even install. and i don't know anything about linux
really.
the thing i want is to download a dvd image since i have dvd rw and don't
have more then 4 700mb cd's. install from dvd and it work out of the box
without any configuration on my part for my nic, audio chip, monitor, video
etc.
my pc is as follows that i would like to get unix running. linux, whatever.
