Yes, that's why most sensible users have a well configured firewall, and
don't go on dodgy sites, or download .scr files off usenet etc etc....
SP2 should close most of the "vulnerabilities" (as do the windows updates,
(even though they take bloody ages to be released)), so after SP2 is
properly released the amount of systems going tits up because of viruses
should reduce dramatically....
