Sounds to me like something similar to dialing rules; perhaps not dialing
a 9 to get out, or maybe there should/should not be a 1 or the area code
in the number dialed when there isn't/is one....

Linux has no "com" ports. They're tty. And COM3 in WinDOS would be ttyS2
in Linux.
