You are actually too elite for linux.

Ditch XP. Seriously. A nice stable service-pack upgraded Windows 2000
should never give you problems, expecially if you use different, locked-
down accounts.
You sound trojaned, possibly. Or just hosed in a manner that can't be
fixed with Windows update.
I'd also recommend two drives: one for data (in fat32, not ntfs), and
another for an OS. So you can get past this data loss stuff.
