Hi, gang,
I am being driven crazy by dropped connections on instant messenger
services. At first, I thought it was my GAIM. With Gaim, 0.78, I was
having occasional trouble maintaining connections, especially with Jabber,
ICQ and MSN, however also some with Yahoo and AOL. When Yahoo developed a
terminal case of not being able to read my password, I upgraded to Gaim
0.79. However, there was no change.
Today, I installed AIM 1.5.286 for Linux and Yahoo Messenger 1.0.4 for
Unix/Linux. I also deleted my Gaim 0.79 and replaced it with Gaim 0.80.
With the Gaim, I only signed on to ICQ, MSN and Jabber. The latter two
were as bad as ever and, since I almost never use them, I deleted them.
Switching to Yahoo Messenger solved the problem of getting online with
Yahoo. However, I still have the same level of trouble maintaining a
connection with ALL of them. Every five to ten minutes I have to
reconnect at least one of them.
I also have some trouble listening to streaming audio from web sites (keep
losing the connection). There may be a link between the two problems. I
don't know.
I know that with dial modems, that kind of problem is relatively common.
However, I use a one megabaud cable modem connection.
I use Mandrake 9.2 and KDE 3.1.3 in addition to the above.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you.
