I thought of doing that, but I don't want to have to go into the BIOS to
change which disk i'm booting off each time i switch on

Yes, but i would like access to the SATA drive from Linux

I can choose to boot from IDE primary or secondary, master or slave, ls120,
SCSI, network, cdrom, floppy. No SATA, but in the SCSI boot options, i can
choose Silicon Image controler for SATA. So it's a bit confusing whether the
Linux kernel will need SCSI support or just SATA drivers for linux will be
needed.

Thanks heaps for you help, i'll give it a go on the IDE MBR, and look at the
SATA issue after installation.
