This happened to me when I restored a backup after a reinstall. What had
happened is that while .mozilla existed elsewhere, the ownership changed
to root:root.
I didn't notice the problem for a day because .mozilla is a hidden
directory. The fix for me, as root:
chown -R username:username /home/username/.mozilla
Also, as asked in another post, is Mozilla-Mail installed? I use
Mandrake-10, and the default install only includes Mozilla itself, and
none of the extras like Composer, Address Book, IRC Chat, Mail,
Enigmail, etc, etc. Your distribution may vary. Check and see.
