Fire up a text editor and view the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Be root if
you want to actually edit it ;).

Other file names for this file may be XF86Config or xorg.conf if you decide
to upgrade to Slackware 10. It's best to check the /etc/X11 directory.

You'll need to scroll down to the section which describes the mouse input
device.

Comment out the line that reads:
        Option "Emulate3Buttons"
like this
        # Option "Emulate3Buttons"

Now you'll need the following options which may already be present so edit
them if they are, otherwise type them in. In the mouse section, of
course :p.

        Option "Buttons" "5"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

You have 5 buttons, Left, Right, MWPress, ScrollUp, ScrollDown.
ZAxisMapping tells xfree to treat buttons 4 and 5 as your up and down scroll
wheel.

Save that, then restart your X server. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.

If that doesn't work for you try changing your mouse protocol for something
different.
        Option "Protocol" "IMPS2"
As an example.

My advice would be to go for Slackware 10. You can make room by not
installing everything. Do you need a web server on your laptop? Do you
need KDE *and* Gnome?

Pick the one you mostly use, and don't install the other, or go for a leaner
system with Xfce window manager, mozilla, abiword.

Final word of advice if you go for Slackware 10:
Install swaret and learn how to use it. It is a dependancies aware web
update utility that can also be used to install software that doesn't make
it onto the installation CDs. Slackware is bigger than the contents of the
installation CDs, so don't be restricted by what is on them. You may find
the leaner alternatives reside on the Slackware FTP site.
