USB-to-ethernet that works in Linux Laptops?

I have just about had it with PCMCIA cards that flake out in Windows,
then also give up the ghost in Linux. It's a Thinkpad 600, mind, but
once Win95 (yes I avoid the registry) decides to call it quits with a
Trendnet card and a COMPUSA ethernet card, Linux in dual-boot breaks
off with her as well.
So now I would like to abandon all hope for PCMCIA and strive to
negotiate the uncharted waters of USB-to-ethernet plugs. Are they easy
to use in Linux? My laptop sports a RH7 mutant version that's got a
couple of Mandrake RPMS mixed in. What are your experiences? Do all
brands work alike? Could somebody point me in the right direction?
