ICS and the way that Linux "shares" a connection are very different.
Though a router is a perfectly good solution, it certainly isn't
necessary.

There is only one Linux, many distros... which you use is a personal
preference based on which distro you like. At the core, Linux is Linux.

The easiest way to "share" your internet connection through your Linux box
is to run squid to proxy internet traffic (no routing/natting involved).
If the Linux box can get to the internet, anything can get to the internet
through it.
