I certainly wasn't saying that with RAID you don't need backups.
Mirroring will protect you against a hard drive failure, but it won't
help if someone deletes files that they shouldn't, nor will it help if
you if there is a fire and the whole system is a heap of metal and
melted plastic.
I just wanted to point out that software RAID is a very inexpensive
way to cover hard drive failures, so your statement "if I grow enough
that I can justify RAID" isn't valid unless you really have to watch
the pennies.
