Just to amplify Bit Twister.
If you open/raise/click on the shell/monitor image at the bottom of the
screen you will be using the shell in the c(k)onsole and are working from
the command line. If the command is python or vi say, you will then be
working in them rather than the shell, even though you are still in the
console mode. If you press ctrl-alt-Fx where x is 1 to 6 you will find
yourself in one of six virtual consoles where you can login as user or
root, usefull to open a few of these to sort out problems if the GUI is
not functioning. Ctrl-alt-F7 brings the pretty pictures back up again.
