Thats not true. You still can compile your programs in SuSE as long the
packages compatible with that distro. SuSE has make programms installation
and setup easier bt YaST.

YaST installed the programms to their certain root file by default, but if
you want to relocate it to somewhere else, it can be done by command line.
In case you want to share the files with other users, 'home' file will be
enough.

Read more documentations and articles, ask, try it yourself and avoid root
previliage.
