Have you tried to ping or ssh to your frozen box from the others?
Most of the times such a freeze turns out to be a hardware related problem,
or a wrong driver setting. Since samba uses highly windows-optimized system
calls, it isn't compareable with ftp.
What is the drivelight doing when the system freezes?
First, try to set "use sendfile = no". Then chack your cabling to the ide
drives. If necessary, use smartctl to set the dma mode one lower.
Make sure your network cards do negotiate the same speed/duplex mode
(mii-tool or ethertool in linux), or use a switch instead of a hub, or even
try a crossover direct connection.
