Heres your problem, the 192.30.x.x network is a routable network, what
you are after is a non routable, private ip space. So change the IP's to
read 192.168.30.1 and .2 or even something like 10.0.0.1 and .2
reconfigure your nic's to these ip's and try again,
Also you are correct in saying that you dont need a gateway. If these
pc's are in a completely isolated lan with no other network access.
Also once you have changed the IP's to somethign private and
non-routable then on either box run # mii-tool and make sure the link is
up and the cards have negotiated a link speed. If not, then either one
or both of the nic's are faulty or the cable may have a krimp in it or
an internal broken wire, see if you can get a hold of a cable tester to
make sure the cable is infact correctly wired xover and is not broken
anywhere internally :)
