Indeed, and the problem turned out, of course, to be unrelated to Slackware
or Linux. Running the install script directly (as you suggested), using:

./install --single --prefix=/home/user

installed OK, but running the subsequent user-setup program afterwards gave
a Segmentation Fault. This was good, as at least I was getting *some* kind
of feedback now, and I was able to locate the problem by strace'ing to the
segfault.

Turns out that the user had installed a dozen or so broken fonts, and
OpenOffice was choking on them. I removed the fonts, and the setup
completed fine. Anti-climactic, but a big relief for me.
