Nice to see a good project using open source software, good luck.

Installing a livecd to a hard disk somewhat (very much so) defeats the
object, it would presumably run with a lot of slow-down for no real
benefit. A newbie distro like Mandrake may be more suitable for a hard
disk install. For something a little more advanced try Debian or even
Slackware.

Depends how you define 'copied', can you be a little clearer, what progam?
cp,dd etc?

Yup

You probably don't want to (as above), but since you asked lilo - the
LInux LOader is a possible solution. It's reasonably documented on google.
GRUB is also a possibility (Grand Unified Bootloader) and it's
documentation is a little clearer to understand. If configuring a
bootloader is something you will find difficult try a distro like Mandrake
or SUSE designed to boot from the hard disk.

(disclaimer: I personally hate grubs syntax compared to lilo, but most
people new to bootloaders seem to prefer it for some reason)
