I have Mandrake 8.1 Pro
Installed on the following machine.
It serves as my web server and was my first experiment
in porting my Progress DB and 4GL accounting system to Linux. If it
will run old and slow then…
You know the drill.
This machines has scsi drive and CD-ROM
This machine will run KDE but one wants a nap between clicks.

Have made the jump from SCO to Linux, running on SuSE 8.1 pro as my
preferred platform. I have 9.1 but I prefer 8.1 for the stuff I do.
I have a couple of plain Jane PC's 256MG 30GIG 500MHZ Athlon 1100MHZ
Athlon kind of machines and they are find application server machines
for 2 or 3 users. The 500MHZ machine is uncomfortable (slow) running
KDE, the 1100MHZ machine does KDE
Quite nicely. Big iron makes a BIG difference.
‘nuf rant.
The learning curve is pretty steep even with years of unix geeking. I
recommend a late model SuSE or Mandrake for both machines. The slow
machine will likely be your command line learning environment. On a
faster machine you get to choose.
Good Luck, and Have Fun!!
Regards…Dan.
