The closest I've found to IrfanView for slide shows is GQView. But try
others. There's no editing in GQView, though. Several other offerings
have editing, like PixiePlus. If all you're looking for is editing,
GIMP is unbeatable.

Mozilla can be a little slow. I've found Galeon to be faster and with
most of Mozilla's capabilities (it's a cut-down version). You might
also want to try out Firefox, the successor to both.

For burning I used XCDRoast for several years. Now I've switched to K3B.

Don't know about the AVIs, but if you're looking for a good way to
view JPG thumbnails, try PixiePlus. Actually, though, the Konquerer
web browser also shows thumbnails of most graphics formats.

I guess I should have read this first. Konquerer and K3B are KDE
programs. Still, unless you haven't actually installed them, they
should work under Gnome. Most, but not all, programs don't care
whether they're running under Gnome or KDE. I run both Konquerer and
KDE, among others, under the IceWM window manager, which is neither.

Switching can be a bit disorienting at first. But I've found that I
prefer my Linux tools and get my work done faster and easier with
them. It was definitely worth it.

"Best of breed" is too large a category. What type of program are you
specifically looking for?
