My first recommendation would be: go to OfficeMax and get a new 80gb hard
disk for $40 and install it. 2gb is not enough for much of anything
anymore - the rest of the equipment is reasonable.
Second recommendation - visit www.distrowatch.com for a couple of weeks,
and get a feel for what is available. You'll also want to become familiar
with www.yolinux.com and www.tldp.org.
Third recommendation - install three or four promising distributions and
set up a multi-boot system. Not that hard, and if you need help, you can
find it here.
Good distributions for beginners include (but are certainly not limited
to) Mandrake, Ubuntu, Knoppix (it's a live CD, but can be installed from
the CD as well), Linspire (formerly Lindows), and a host of lesser known
distributions.
